Regulate running events in Bangalore for runner safety
The Issue
As a fellow runner and being part of few big running communities based out of Bangalore, I wanted to bring up this issue to goverment and the NEB sports regarding the Wipro Bengaluru Marathon. We all expected it to be a smoother and great running experience Unfortunately, the reality was shockingly different. During the marathon, many witnessed numerous runners, struggle desperately due to the basic inadequacies in the event's organization. Many participants fainted or ran out of energy, primarily due to inadequate hydration support.
From the 10th kilometer mark onward, many were left to fend for themselves with alarmingly insufficient access to water, electrolytes, and simple subtenance such as biscuits, salt, sugar, and bananas. This was not only unexpected but dangerous. The lack of these essentials put many runners' health and safety at risk, a situation that should not occur, especially in a paid event.
Runners pay a considerable amount to participate in these events, expecting a level of professionalism, safety, and care that was clearly absent. This negligence disrupts the trust between organizers and participants and discourages the fitness culture we aim to promote in Bangalore.
It is imperative for the concerned authorities to establish comprehensive regulations for running events in Bangalore, ensuring that standard guidelines for hydration, nutrition, and first aid are mandatory for all organizers. Proper rules will not only assure the safety of all runners but will also uphold the city's reputation as a major hub for fitness and sporting events.
