Make Virginia Street a great place for people to enjoy Midtown.

The Issue

The Problem:

Virginia Street in its current condition fails to meet all the needs of the community.  The sidewalks are woefully inadequate -- they are narrow and often blocked by telephone poles -- and intersections are unsafe for pedestrians. The streets and sidewalks are dangerous for all modes of transportation, lack attractive and inviting streetscapes and do not provide mobility for disabled residents.

The current plan from RTC is an improvement to the existing facilities, but we believe the plans fall short of making Virginia a great street for Midtown.

The Solution:

The Great Streets Coalition wants to ensure that the proposed changes to the Virginia Street corridor provide more than an incremental improvement to the street, but instead transform Midtown and the entire Virginia street into a great place for everyone.

We envision a Virginia Street that has spacious sidewalks that provide a comfortable place for people of all abilities to walk, shop and dine. The street has beautiful trees and planters, benches for people to stop and rest, and intersections that provide safe crossings.

The road provides safe interactions between pedestrians, bikes, vehicles and transit while also facilitating smooth travel. Placement of parking should be strategic and managed to maximize utility.
