Reform YouTube's Demonetization and Age Restriction Systems

Reform YouTube's Demonetization and Age Restriction Systems
The Issue
As a regular YouTube user, I have witnessed firsthand the impact of the platform's age restriction and demonetization policies on content creators. For many YouTubers, this platform is their primary source of income, and these policies can significantly affect their livelihoods. Even educational videos about important historical events like the Holocaust are not spared from these restrictive measures.
This concerns me, especially when I am the owner of a small channel. Although I haven’t been monetized yet, I am worried if YouTube does eventually age-restrict my content or demonetize mine when I get monetized.
Moreover, there seems to be an inconsistency in how these rules are applied. Numerous videos with similar content remain monetized, while others face restrictions or demonetization. Larger channels are less likely to be affected since they appear to not have the same scrutiny as smaller channels. This unfair practice has led to frustration among both creators and viewers alike.
The demonetization and age restriction policies have created a chilling effect that makes creators afraid to fully express themselves for fear of losing income. I’ve seen many YouTubers censor the word “kill” because they fear demonetization.
The worst aspect of YouTube's demonetization system is that it continues to display advertisements on demonetized videos, despite YouTube's assertions that the demonetization policies aim to satisfy advertisers. Presumably, this action is to increase earnings, which is both immoral and corrupt.
YouTube needs to reform its current systems and replace them with an age rating system akin to film and television ratings that allows for monetization across all age ratings. This would serve as a compromise between advertisers, YouTube itself, parents who worry about what their children watch online, and creators who depend on this platform for their income.
By implementing an age rating system that restricts certain advertisements to specific age ratings - such as alcohol ads being restricted to adult-rated videos - we can ensure that content remains suitable for its intended audience without penalizing creators financially.
This change would also benefit parents by putting parental controls in place even when not signed in. It is time for a fairer system that respects all stakeholders involved in the YouTube community.
