Reform YouTube’s Algorithm for Less Addiction and More Education

Reform YouTube’s Algorithm for Less Addiction and More Education
The Issue
Like many others, I have experienced firsthand the pull of YouTube’s addictive content recommendations. Day after day, YouTube’s algorithm encourages us to watch and keep watching, often leading us away from educational content and toward aimless entertainment. Many of us sacrifice precious time, mental well-being, and even our work or studies because we get sucked into the vortex of endless video consumption. YouTube’s current system is a breeding ground for addiction and it's time for a change.
It has been proven that excessive exposure to a platform that enables such unnaturally high levels of consumption can lead to detrimental effects not only on individuals but society as a whole. Studies by the University of Pennsylvania and Stanford University indicate the severe consequences of excessive screen time and exposure to addictive algorithms, affecting sleep patterns, studies, work productivity, and overall health (Source: Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, 2018).
YouTube needs to be held accountable for their contribution to this rising epidemic. We call upon YouTube to change its algorithm to prioritize quality over quantity, learning over mindless entertainment. We need enhanced filters, well-moderated content, and a reduction in the amount of content shown on the homepage and below videos to lessen the chance of aimless scrolling.
Improving YouTube will not only help us use our time more effectively, but it will also make us more informed, more educated, and less prone to digital addiction. This is an urgent call for a more responsible YouTube! Please, sign this petition and fight for a better online environment.
