Reform the Indiana Parenting Guidelines- let’s actually focus on the child’s best interest
The Issue
Tragically, personal experience has compelled me to advocate for urgent reform of the Indiana parenting guidelines. My six-year-old son, whose father has been absent for over 4 and a half years, is now facing the struggles of adapting to the presence of his returning father and adjusting to his separate household.
My son discovered who his dad was when he turned 5, prior to that, he didn’t believe he even had a father. His father moved to Florida upon learning about my pregnancy, and after 8 months, he requested a paternity test, which, in fact, confirmed he was the father.
Almost 4 years later, after getting caught in a major drug bust, my son’s father has returned back to Indiana and demands parenting rights.
His father has proven to be an irresponsible parent – neglecting his responsibilities and repeatedly leaving my son - not once, but twice to fulfill a party lifestyle across the country. Known for his unhealthy habits, such as chronic drug abuse and alcoholism, his misconduct and ill treatment of those around him is alarming. Yet, the laws of Indiana still grant him an opportunity for repeated attempts at presence in my son’s life. This is not an isolated case; similar stories repeat in households across the state, with children inevitably bearing the brunt of our inadequate parenting laws.
Statistics from the Indiana Department of Child Services report an alarming number of child neglect cases, with rates increasing annually. Imprudent regulation of parenting rights stands out as a contributing factor. We believe there is a dire need for tailoring these rules effectively, prioritizing child well-being over parental rights when necessary.
I'm not asking for a removal of rights, but a critical, case-by-case evaluation of the situation and the individuals involved. It's time for the Indiana state laws to offer more robust protection for our children against unfit parents, rather than enabling damaging behavior via multiple unwarranted chances.
Current guidelines often neglect the perspectives of children, leading to a disconnection between their needs and the decisions made by adults. Incorporating children's viewpoints into parenting guidelines can empower them, fostering a sense of agency and confidence. This empowerment is crucial in helping children develop resilience and emotional intelligence, skills that are essential for navigating the complexities of adulthood.
By implementing reforms that take into account a parent’s behavior and its impact on the child, we can create a framework that not only protects children but also holds parents accountable for their actions.
Children are our future, and we must shield them from harm and offer them a nurturing environment. Sign this petition now to call upon the reformation of the Indiana parenting rules and thus ensure the safety and stability of our children's lives.
