Reform the FCPS Dress Code!

Reform the FCPS Dress Code!
The Issue
The Frederick County Public Schools dress code policy reinforces outdated and sexist stereotypes and disproportionately enforced against students on the basis of gender identity, sexual orientation, race, household income, and body type and size. Students are often sexualized and publicly shamed, forced to miss valuable class time simply because of what they are wearing. Dress code violations are subject to the interpretation of staff members and administrators, imposing an inconsistent and targeted enforcement system that varies significantly from school to school.
We are proposing a dress code reform policy that:
- includes student voices through the creation of a Student Dress Code Advisory Committee
- removes reckless language like "revealing" or "distracting"
- recognizes the responsibility of teachers and students to manage their own personal "distractions" without regulation student clothing
- treats all students equally, regardless of gender identity, race, sexual orientation, household income, and body type/size
- standardizes the enforcement protocol for teachers/administrators in all FCPS schools
By signing this petition, you are helping us show FCPS staff and members of the Board of Education the need for an updated dress code policy that eliminates discriminatory and inconsistent attitudes towards the self expression and individual comfort of students.
