I am a student at Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design (RMCAD), living away from my family who resides out of state. This situation restricts me to vacations no longer than five days every eight weeks. The current attendance policy at RMCAD is such that if a student exceeds a five-day absence, their letter grade is reduced by one, regardless of whether they have completed their assignments or not.

This policy poses significant challenges for students like me who may fall ill and require more than the allotted days off. It also limits our ability to visit our families or take necessary breaks for mental health reasons. The policy does not accommodate unforeseen circumstances that might require us to be absent from class.

According to data from the National Center for Education Statistics, flexible attendance policies can contribute positively towards academic success and overall well-being of students. Therefore, we urge RMCAD administration to reconsider its rigid attendance rules.
