The Issue

Your Taxes Pay for Primaries for the Two Major Parties
The state of Pennsylvania pays over 20 million dollars for every primary election, but over 1.3 million Pennsylvania taxpayers are not allowed to vote! Third parties pay for their own nomination process. Why are we paying to nominate candidates if we can’t vote for them?

Manufactured Support
Closed primaries create the illusion that the two major parties have more support than they do. Many independent voters register as either Democrat or Republican to vote in primaries. Major party status is determined by the number of voters registered with a political party. Third-party voters have to choose between helping their party become a major party with a ballot in the primaries or being allowed to vote in them.

It's a Club and You Aren’t In It
Candidates must collect petition signatures from registered voters to get their name on a ballot. The number of signatures required by major party candidates to get on a primary ballot is much lower than the number of signatures required by independents and third-party candidates to get on the general election ballot. Unfair ballot access requirements make running for office too expensive, discouraging many independent candidates.

Ever Wonder Why Politicians Seem Unresponsive to Voters?
In dark red and blue districts, the primary IS the election. Yet, low voter turnout means a very low percentage of eligible voters will vote for the winner of a primary election. According to analysis from Unite America, only 7% of voters elect 87% of Congress!

Every Voter Every Election
We The People Party of Pennsylvania believe that politicians should represent all their constituents. We believe that all voters should be able to vote in all elections. Citizens should not be taxed to pay for elections they cannot participate in.

Real Districts Real Choices
The outcome of an election should not be predetermined by the outline of the voting district. More voices need to be included in redistricting to provide equal representation, and ballot access requirements should be the same for all candidates. A fair election means voters have a real choice.

It's past time to overhaul Pennsylvania's election laws. It has been 88 years since the code was written. Piecemeal updates and band-aids offered by the courts have only contributed to confusion, abusive lawfare, and unequal practices across counties.

We need a new set of laws that make it easier for good candidates to run and allow all voters and candidates to participate in every election.
