Reform Ontario’s Rental Laws to Protect Landlords from Non-Paying and Abusive Tenants

The Issue

Ontario’s housing system is failing small landlords. Many of us rely on rental income to cover mortgages, property taxes, and utilities. Yet when tenants stop paying rent, we are left powerless for months or even years while cases crawl through a severely backlogged Landlord and Tenant Board (LTB).

During this time, non-paying tenants often cause major property damage, ghost landlords, and exploit legal delays - all while landlords continue to foot the bill. This imbalance is not sustainable and it’s driving responsible landlords out of the market, worsening the housing crisis for everyone.

We are calling on Premier Doug Ford and the Ontario Government to take bold action now. We demand immediate reform of Ontario’s rental enforcement system to:

  1. Fast-track eviction hearings for non-payment of rent within 7 days
  2. Allow police reports for fraudulent tenancies (false ID, serial non-payment)
  3. Create a Landlord Enforcement Unit to help with garnishments, orders, and damages
  4. Automatically report LTB arrears and rulings to credit bureaus
  5. Launch a verified provincial Tenant Registry accessible to landlords

These reforms would protect landlords from financial abuse and restore fairness to Ontario’s rental system.

Please sign and share this petition to demand stronger protections and real accountability in the rental market. It’s time to bring balance back to landlord-tenant laws.
