Reform News Media Practices to Ensure Truthful Reporting

The Issue

A family member, who suffers from invisible illnesses, such as Fibromyalgia which alone has 145 symptoms. Was unfairly depicted  in a defamatory way within the News Media as someone making fraudulent claims when they have established qualifying medical conditions which give them their disability allowance.. This personal experience has opened my eyes to the need for change in how news media operates. We demand that only factual and truthful information be printed, eliminating gossip, opinion pieces without clear labeling, fake headlines, etc. It's crucial to stop the spread of stories from one outlet to another without proper verification without being added to or embellished for effect.  All mainstream media has to check the facts  are #100  true before publishing or they can be sued for any interpretation not based on factual evidence, be made libel for court costs and compensation for the distress caused to the victim from online abuse and negative in person interactions. Change the length of time one can make claims against false reporting. Make it timeless instead of time limited to 12 months for defamation or slander/libel and misinformation. Hold news media outlets accountable and make them publicly apologize to victims of their misinformation, hold them responsibile for thrid party releases. If you are a parent and you have a child you are thus responsible for the child. Similarly media outlets should be held accountable for third party releases and distribution and they should make every effort to shut it down. Mandatory reconsideration of old news when being circulated all stories over 3 years old taken down and never reused as current due to misinformation and old news. Stop news media victimising someone based on their looks or mental health conditions. Compensation by newspapers to families for suicides, and damaged reputation when proven innocent  starting from but not limited to £100.000.

According to a 2018 study by Pew Research Center, 64% of Americans believe fake news has caused "a great deal" of confusion about basic facts of current events. This statistic underlines the urgent need for reform.

Furthermore, outdated news based on conjecture should not be re-released as updated content misleading readers about its freshness and relevance.

We call upon all stakeholders in the media industry - journalists, editors, publishers and regulatory bodies - to take immediate action towards this reform ensuring that what we read is nothing but facts and truth.
