Reform Mauritius Adoption Laws: Every Child Deserves a Loving Family
The Issue
Every Child Deserves a Loving Home — Reform Mauritius' Adoption Laws Now
In Mauritius, many children are growing up in institutional care, denied the chance to thrive in loving, permanent families. Why? Because our adoption laws are outdated and exclusionary.
Who is being left behind?
Same-sex couples, single parents, and families with children born via surrogacy are excluded from adopting. These families are ready to offer love, stability, and care—but the law says no. Meanwhile, children wait in limbo, missing out on the emotional support and safety that only a permanent home can provide.
What’s at stake?
If we don’t act now, countless children will continue to grow up without the nurturing environment they deserve. Families willing to adopt are being turned away, while vulnerable children remain in institutions. Reforming adoption laws will open doors to inclusive, timely, and child-centered placements—giving every child the chance to thrive.
Why now?
Mauritius is currently drafting a new Child Adoption Bill. This is a rare and urgent opportunity to shape a law that reflects our values of equality, compassion, and justice. With growing public support for LGBTQ+ rights and family diversity, we must ensure no child is left behind due to legal discrimination or bureaucratic delay.
We Call On:
The Government of Mauritius
Ministry of Gender Equality and Family Welfare
National Adoption Council
Members of Parliament
To urgently reform Mauritius’ adoption laws and ensure every child—regardless of background—has the opportunity to grow up in a safe, loving, and permanent family.
What Needs to Change:
Include same-sex couples and surrogacy-born children in adoption eligibility.
Simplify and speed up adoption procedures with clear timelines.
Promote local adoption through public awareness and outreach.
Support adoptive families with financial aid, counseling, and mental health services.
Protect adopted children’s right to know their biological history.
Strengthen legal safeguards to prioritize children’s stability and well-being.
Take Action
Outdated laws must not stand in the way of a child’s right to love and security. Sign this petition to demand a truly inclusive and child-centered adoption law—one that reflects our shared values of equality, dignity, and compassion.
