In a lamentable incident, a diabetic student from Kilvington Grammar School tragically lost their life during a school trip to Vietnam. It's clear that the health policies currently in place weren't adequate to protect a student with a condition such as diabetes. An estimated 422 million adults worldwide suffer from diabetes (World Health Organization, 2021). It's inevitable that some of our children will be counted in this number, and they must be guarded during school activities.

For the sake of our children's safety, it's crucial that the school revises its health policies and makes special provisions for students living with diabetic conditions, especially during school camps and expeditions. Early detection and improved management of diabetes can drastically decrease the threat of life-threatening complications (American Diabetes Association, 2021) - the schools should have a crucial role in this.

There should be specific guidelines for school staff and trained healthcare providers to ensure effective monitoring and management of the diabetic condition of students during school camps. Last but not least, a policy that fosters a safe and inclusive environment for students with diabetes, emphasizing that they, too, can participate in all school activities without fear.
