Reform Housing Assistance for Homeless People: End Discrimination and Provide Equal Opportunit
The Issue
I, as a homeless individual who has experienced firsthand the struggles of finding safe and stable housing, am deeply concerned about the current state of housing assistance provided by local councils in the UK. It is disheartening to witness vulnerable individuals from all walks of life, this through relationship breakdowns, loss of children, other tenants anti social behaviour, possible drug users situated around rehabilitation, being turned away and denied support, due to outdated laws from 1900s or even further to 1800s, such as the local connection law, priority banding, and Intentional Homeless Act. Therefore, I am initiating this petition to rally Public Support, community Action, Charity support, advocacy services, possible other branches of this great Country in particular Wales and Scotland, in urging a change in these discriminatory, persecution, Professional Bullying, Government Actions being against eco-friendly practices.
Personal Story:
As a homeless person from the children and Family social services care system "1986" failings from very, very young ages. Started being homeless age approximately 21 years old.
From various walks of life, I have witnessed countless individuals alongside veterans, teenaged individuals, Elderly, severely Mentally struggling individuals, facing homelessness being denied assistance, Emergency Housing, professionals non judgemental approach, solely based on their lack of "local connection, or their former behaviour". Alongside an outdated county systems of should one say spill, to suggestions of intention to change, due to suffering significant health issues.
This arbitrary requirement not only perpetuates homelessness, judges them, persecutes them, prevents any form of community changes, or even possibly to build eco-friendly emergency housing from structural supports. But exacerbates the already dire housing crisis, Cost of living crisis, Creates a Community crisis in professional services, we face today. It is unjust that someone's access to shelter, chances of Emergency Accommodation, critical stability, should be determined by their Geographical, Family history, social history, professional ties rather than their genuine need for help.
Furthermore, the intentional homeless act often penalizes individuals who have found themselves without a home, not homeless ( this is a form of Discrimination to the otherwise, unhoused, due to circumstances beyond their control.
Many people become unintentionally homeless due to factors such as job loss, relationship breakdowns, or financial hardships. Punishing them further by denying them emergency housing or long-term support only perpetuates the cycle of homelessness and denies them an opportunity for stability.
Facts and Statistics:
1. According to Shelter UK, there were an estimated 280,000 people recorded as homeless in England alone at the end of 2020.
2. The Local Government Association reported that between 2019-2020, local authorities accepted over 68 thousand households as statutory homeless.
3. A study conducted by Crisis UK revealed that nearly two-thirds (63%) of single adults experiencing homelessness had no local connection where they sought help.
Petition Demands:
1. Reevaluate and reform the outdated and Historical local connection law, Priority banding Law. In Accordance with the Scottish parliament status.this was conducted so the above would be prevented, but also so that vulnerable individuals are not unfairly denied access to essential housing assistance based on their Geographical, Local connection family, Priority situation ties.
2. Amend the intentional homeless act to ensure that individuals who have become unintentionally homeless receive the support they need, rather than being penalized, judged, criticised, persecuted for circumstances beyond their control.
3. Increase funding, resources, training, experience in Homeless individuals shoes, Ensure all Housing Officers personally understand without judgement what the individuals before them are suffering, experiencing. But also for local councils to provide adequate emergency housing and long-term solutions for those experiencing/ living homelessness.
By signing this petition, you are standing up against discrimination, Persecution, Judgement, helping and advocating for a fairer and more compassionate/ empathetic approach to addressing the housing crisis in our communities. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of countless individuals who deserve a chance at stability and security. and break down the stigma attached to individuals who on unfortunately residing in street alleys, shop windows. And instead provide them assistance, an ear, a hot coffee or sandwich. As they are Humans like all of us!!!
Thank you for your support in bringing about meaningful change in how councils look at the housing crisis and provide assistance to those most in need.
I ask that anyone signing my petition, communication is a key to getting the requirements of change. Together we can change a nation for the better. And present a government with alternative options to prevent further family's suffering.
