I am a parent of five wonderful children, all under the age of 10. Each day, as I send them off to school, I hope that I will never receive that life altering phone call that too many parents across the United States have received. As a mother, I am filled with sorrow and rage at the endless number of school shootings and gun-related incidents that claim innocent lives. I cannot—and will not—wait for tragedy to strike my family before I take initiative to demand change.

Gun violence has become a painfully common headline in America, with over 39,000 deaths linked to firearms each year, according to the CDC. Children and teenagers are not just statistics—they are our future leaders, inventors, and caregivers. It is our duty to create a safer environment for them to learn and grow, free from the threat of gun violence.

The lack of comprehensive gun reform is putting our children at unnecessary risk every single day.

Other nations have successfully reduced gun violence through stringent regulations and reform. For example, Australia instituted sweeping gun laws after a tragic mass shooting, reducing mass shootings from eleven in the decade before to zero in the decades that followed. Extending similar measures with bipartisan support could be the key to ensuring a future where we no longer live in fear of sending our children to school.

We are calling upon lawmakers at every level—local, state, and federal—to prioritize the lives and safety of our children with the urgency and dedication that this crisis demands. By joining together, our voices can form a wave of change reshaping gun laws to protect the most vulnerable among us.
