Reform Canada's Justice System for Domestic Violence Survivors
The Issue
I am sharing my story not only to shed light on my own experience, but to expose a serious failure within our justice system. On December 12, 2025, I found the courage to leave a domestic violence relationship that had lasted 15 years. Since that day, I have never looked back. Despite the years of abuse I endured, my abuser was charged with two counts of assault and breach of probation, pleaded guilty, and ultimately received a sentence of time served, amounting to less than one month of incarceration. This outcome sends a troubling message to survivors: that the pain, trauma, and long-term impact of domestic violence are not being met with meaningful accountability. How can this be considered justice?
This isn’t just about my experience; it's about a justice system that continuously lets survivors down. Equally troubling is that my abuser is currently on bail for previous domestic violence offences. I was advised by the Crown that he is not expected to serve jail time and will likely receive a conditional sentence. There were also allegations of child abuse, supported by evidence I provided. Despite charges being laid, they were dropped just two weeks later. For victims and survivors, decisions like these create the perception that serious acts of violence against women and children are not being treated with the urgency and accountability they deserve.
When allegations are made up and the system allows them to go unchecked, it’s a betrayal to every person they claim to protect. We need a system that holds perpetrators accountable and upholds the safety of survivors as its utmost priority. From false allegations to dropped charges, these are deep flaws in our justice system that must be addressed immediately.
I urge you to consider this situation with the gravity it deserves. We need reforms that ensure perpetrators face real consequences, and that survivors can trust in the protection offered to them. We must push for stricter enforcement of charges, protection for those who have left, and assurance that no survivor feels trapped again.
