I am a proud Australian who deeply loves my country. However, I believe that our current gun laws are not adequately addressing the root causes of violence. Instead, they seem to be pushing people towards alternative weapons or even 3D printed firearms. This is a personal issue for me as I feel it is essential for us to have the means to defend ourselves if necessary.

Our gun laws should focus on identifying and treating mental illnesses which often play a significant role in violent incidents. According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, one in five Australians experiences mental illness each year, yet many do not receive adequate treatment (AIHW). By focusing on this aspect, we can potentially prevent violent incidents from occurring in the first place.

Additionally, allowing law-abiding citizens to conceal carry could provide an additional layer of protection against potential threats. In countries like Switzerland where responsible gun ownership is encouraged, crime rates are significantly lower (World Population Review).

Finally, changing these laws could also help bridge the gap between veterans and younger generations by fostering connections through responsible firearm education and training.
