Reform Arizona's At-Will Employment Law for Better Employee Protection

The Issue

I am one of many Arizonans who have experienced the harsh realities of our state's current At-Will employment law. After three months of unemployment, I finally secured a job, only to lose it during training due to an unspecified background check issue. I suspect this is connected to my legal use of medical marijuana for my disability.

Arizona's At-Will employment law allows employers to terminate employees without cause, leaving workers vulnerable and unprotected. This policy disproportionately affects individuals with disabilities like myself who rely on legal medical treatments that may be misunderstood or stigmatized.

Arizona is one among the 27 states in the U.S that fully adhere to this doctrine (source: National Conference of State Legislatures). However, it is time we join other states like Montana which has modified its laws providing more protection for employees (source: Montana Code Annotated 2019).

Employees deserve as much protection as employers. We need a balanced system where both parties are treated fairly and with respect. It’s time we reform our state law regarding Arizona being an At-Will state.

I urge you all to sign this petition and demand a change in our employment laws so that no individual has their livelihood threatened due to circumstances beyond their control. Let us strive for fairness and equality in our workplaces!
