The Issue

I am raising my voice along with many others in our community because our beloved Blue Valleys performing arts programs are suffering due to recent budget cuts. As a parent and a long-time supporter of both the arts and education, it's heartbreaking to see the invaluable resources and opportunities provided by these programs stripped away. The arts are fundamental in fostering creativity, emotional expression, and teamwork among students, serving as a vital component of a balanced education.

The recent budget reductions in our district have unfairly targeted the performing arts, leading to the cancellation of several anticipated productions, reduced funding for essential supplies, and even the potential loss of dedicated educators and mentors to our students. Schools that once thrived with vibrant theatre, music, and dance programs now face tremendous challenges in offering even the most basic of artistic instruction.

Numerous studies underscore the importance of arts education in enhancing student performance across various academic areas. According to a study conducted by the Arts Education Partnership, students involved in arts learning experiences score better on standardized tests, have higher GPAs, and maintain lower dropout rates. Despite these well-documented benefits, our school district has chosen to cut the arts to the bone rather than finding alternative solutions that preserve these programs.

Moreover, the performing arts programs often act as a sanctuary for students who may not find their niche in traditional academic settings. These programs encourage the growth of self-esteem, communication skills, and self-discipline. They help students from diverse backgrounds come together and celebrate their unique talents, building a stronger, more inclusive community.

I urge the Blue Valleys School Board to reconsider these budget cuts and seek out balanced solutions that protect the performing arts. By exploring alternative cost-saving measures such as reducing administrative expenses, re-evaluating expenditures across non-critical areas, or building partnerships with local businesses and arts organizations, we can safeguard these vital programs.

By signing this petition, you are advocating for a revision of these budget decisions to ensure that our students continue to have access to the arts education that is crucial for their overall growth and future success. Let us come together to prevent the degradation of arts education in our community. Please sign this petition to implore the Blue Valleys School Board to reexamine and rectify the current budget cuts affecting our performing arts programs.
