The Issue

The Brigham Young University (BYU) Nursing Program is renowned for its excellence, yet there is an urgent need to streamline the curriculum by reducing the number of unnecessary courses.

Students are currently burdened with courses that do not directly contribute to their education as future healthcare professionals. This not only prolongs their path to becoming registered nurses but also results in significant financial strain.

In today's fast-paced environment, the demand for qualified nurses is at an all-time high. The American Nurses Association (ANA) forecasts a need for more than 200,000 new registered nurses each year to meet the healthcare needs of the population. Thus, the extended duration caused by redundant or irrelevant coursework at BYU hinders students’ entry into an industry desperately in need of their skills.

By eliminating courses that do not directly serve the nursing curriculum, BYU can enhance the efficiency of its programs, allowing students to complete their degrees in a shorter time frame and lower their education costs. Students can potentially save thousands of dollars in tuition and associated costs, thereby reducing student debt and financial pressure. More importantly, graduating quicker means more nurses can enter the workforce sooner, addressing critical shortages in healthcare sectors.

We propose a thorough and immediate evaluation of the current curriculum by both faculty and students to identify and remove courses that do not serve the core objectives of the nursing program. Collaborating with healthcare industry experts and educational consultants can ensure that the program remains comprehensive yet streamlined.

This petition calls for immediate action from the BYU administration to review and revise the nursing curriculum for the benefit of students and the healthcare community at large. Sign this petition to support a more efficient, cost-effective pathway to a career in nursing.
