The Issue

The MBTA subway system largely touches on whiter, wealthier neighborhoods---and because of this, low income passengers, and riders of ethnic or racial minorities, often depend on local bus systems for their commutes. 57% of all bus passengers are of lower income.

And yet, bus transport is frequently unreliable, with long wait times even during rush hour. Service is even worse in areas with high percentages of racial and ethnic minorities. Black riders spend on average 64 more hours per year aboard MBTA buses when compared to their fellow white passengers.

Inconsistent service disproportionately impacts low-income and minority passengers. And with ongoing MBTA renovations and shutdowns, transit has become even more unreliable.

In 2022, the MBTA opened the Green Line's Medford-Tufts expansion, a project that costed 2.3 billion dollars and largely benefitted wealthier commuters. Our government must prioritize expanding and funding public transport that benefits our low income communities in the same way they do for branches like the Green Line.

This petition proposes that the MBTA allocate their funds to improve the quality of bus services. By signing, you can help bring awareness to the topic, and create a bigger incentive for government officials to address the issue.
