Good morning,

At the start of May, the Mayfield and Five Ashes Parish Council presented this petition to East Sussex County Council, consisting over 580 signatures. This was accepted and a report into the issue was scheduled to be produced.

The report was produced on Friday (13th September). As part of this investigation, East Sussex County Council undertook four speed surveys on Wellbrook Hill. The following assessment was made;

  • "The speed surveys undertaken on the A267 Wellbrook Hill would indicate that a 40mph speed limit may be acceptable in principle."

This is a major step forward as ESCC have now officially stated that a speed limit of 40mph may be appropriate.

The report goes on to say, "The request for a 40mph speed limit on the on the A267 Wellbrook Hill will be assessed as part of the Speed Management Programme. If a lower speed limit is appropriate and the site is identified as a priority, it will be progressed as part of this programme. The prioritisation process will be undertaken during Autumn 2024 and once completed, a list of the selected sites will be added to the Road Safety section of the County Council website.

If the A267 Wellbrook Hill is not identified as a priority as part of the Speed Management Programme, the Road Safety Team will contact the Parish Council to explore if they may consider progressing a scheme as part of a Community Match application"

This is a major step forwards in our campaign. Please rest assure i'll continue to discuss and lobby the involved parties and will provide updates when appropriate.

To all those who have signed this petition and supported the cause to date, thank you. This petition has given the campaign some real weight and we are finally starting to see progress!

Kind regards,

Cllr. Joel Marlow
