I recently renewed my Australian passport, and the total cost came to $445 including passport photos. Like many Australians, I paid this excessive fee because there is no practical alternative.

When my new passport arrived, I was surprised to find it had been sent in nothing more than a thin paper envelope with no additional protection. On removal, I noticed the front and back covers had already begun to curl. For a document that costs hundreds of dollars and is intended to last ten years, this standard of packaging and presentation is difficult to justify.

What is particularly concerning is that this passport is expected to remain valid for a decade. Many countries have strict entry requirements regarding damaged or excessively worn passports, and travellers can be refused entry if their documents are deemed unsuitable. When a passport shows signs of warping or damage straight out of the envelope, it is reasonable to question both the quality of the product and the value being delivered for the price charged.

This experience has only strengthened my view that Australians are paying too much for their passports. It raises a simple question: how can such a high fee be justified when the product itself appears to arrive in a condition that falls short of reasonable expectations?
