The Issue

I am writing this petition out of personal necessity and concern. I, along with several members of my family, have coeliac disease, a serious autoimmune disorder that causes severe health complications if we do not adhere to a strict gluten-free diet. This dietary restriction, however, is accompanied by a significant financial strain, making it challenging for many families to afford the necessary gluten-free foods.

Coeliac disease affects approximately 1% of the population, according to Coeliac UK. Despite this seemingly small figure, for those affected, the consequences of consuming gluten can lead to long-term health issues, including malnutrition, osteoporosis, and even an increased risk of certain cancers. Many of us depend on gluten-free foods to manage this disease, but the inflated prices of these essential items make it difficult for us to maintain our health without financial burden.

Research from the University of Sheffield has shown that gluten-free products are 159% more expensive than their standard counterparts. For individuals and families with limited income, the financial burden of maintaining a gluten-free diet can be overwhelming. It’s unjust that a necessary medical diet remains prohibitively expensive.

Therefore, I am calling on government agencies and food retailers to address this pressing issue. Government support in the form of subsidies or vouchers can make gluten-free foods more accessible and affordable for those in need. Retailers, on the other hand, have the power to negotiate better pricing with suppliers or increase the availability of their own affordable private-label gluten-free products.

We are not asking for special treatment, but equality and fairness in being able to manage our health without financial hardship. Please join me in urging both government and retailers to take immediate action and make gluten-free foods more affordable for coeliac individuals and their families.

Sign this petition to help make a real difference for coeliac communities struggling to afford their dietary necessities. Together, we can push for change that reflects compassion and understanding for those who must live with this chronic condition.
