Reduce Street Sweeping Frequency in Alhambra, CA

The Issue

In our neighborhood, the street sweepers come once a week, and this routine has become a significant inconvenience for us. Each night before the scheduled cleaning, we find ourselves having to move our cars to other streets, causing unnecessary stress and hassle. Not only does this disrupt our daily routine, but it also puts us at risk of receiving costly parking tickets. My husband and I have personally experienced this inconvenience firsthand. In the past, we forgot to move our cars, leading to unexpected tickets that were financially burdensome.

This situation isn't just a minor inconvenience; it's a recurring issue that affects many families in Alhambra, CA. Most residents in our neighborhood have busy lives, juggling work, family, and other commitments. To add an extra task to our already packed schedules is incredibly frustrating. It poses an added stress for many, leading to increased anxiety over forgetting to move vehicles and the financial strain of potential fines. Parking tickets can be as high as $70, which might not seem substantial to some, but can accumulate to a significant amount over multiple instances.

To complicate matters, our segment of Hampden Terrace is especially difficult because parking is restricted to one side on the road (so we can’t simply park on the other side) and many of the houses on the parking side do not have driveways either for cars to be on.

We believe a simple solution exists: reduce the frequency of street sweeping in our neighborhood from once a week to bi-monthly. This change would align better with actual needs, as the streets generally do not require weekly cleaning to maintain cleanliness and safety. Moreover, various cities across the country have implemented such a schedule efficiently without compromising the city’s cleanliness or residents’ convenience.

We understand the importance of street cleaning for aesthetic and health reasons, but a more balanced approach could address the needs of both the city and its residents. A bi-monthly street cleaning schedule would still maintain cleanliness while significantly reducing the inconvenience to residents.

This petition calls on the Alhambra City Council to consider the needs and voices of its citizens by making the practical decision to reduce street sweeping frequency. Let's create a community where the concerns and needs of its residents are valued without compromising on cleanliness and safety. Sign this petition today to support a more convenient and fair system for everyone in Alhambra, CA.
