The issue

Living in the serene suburban areas of Botany, NSW, as a parent, the safety of my children is my utmost priority. The growing prevalence of vehicles speeding through our quiet streets is a pressing concern that must be addressed to ensure the security and peace of mind of all families in our community.

Speeding vehicles pose significant risks to pedestrians, especially children who are unpredictable and may dart onto the streets. Having witnessed numerous close calls, the thought of a preventable accident occurring is the source of constant anxiety for myself and other residents. It is imperative that proactive measures are introduced to mitigate this dangerous trend.

Research supports the notion that reduced speed limits and increased signage are effective in curtailing speeding. Local studies indicate that areas employing these strategies see up to a 40% reduction in speed-related incidents. Introducing slower speed limits, more speed bumps, increasing police patrols, and implementing stricter penalties for speeding/aggressive driving in residential areas are all feasible solutions that the local government can deliver promptly.

Speeding has become a significant concern during peak hours and especially in the mornings and evenings when families and pedestrians are more active. The increased speed not only endangers residents and visitors but also contributes to noise pollution and decreases the overall safety and livability of our community.

I kindly urge the council to consider implementing measures such as increased signage, patrols, speed bumps, or other traffic calming strategies to reduce vehicle speeds and improve safety for all residents. Community support and proactive measures can greatly enhance our neighborhood’s safety and quality of life.

We are calling on Bayside Council to take immediate action. By doing so, they will protect our children and enhance the overall quality of life for the entire community. Implementing these measures is not only practical but essential.

Please sign this petition to urge the Council to prioritize the safety of our suburban streets and take concrete actions to reduce speeding now. Together, we can make Botany a safer place for our children to play and thrive.
