The Issue
Cruz Ochoa was a beloved son, brother, friend, and member of our community. On April 9, his life was tragically taken in a hit and run in Makiki. Our family continues to grieve this devastating loss while seeking answers and accountability. While nothing can bring Cruz back, we believe meaningful safety improvements can help prevent another family from experiencing the same heartbreak. We respectfully ask the Honolulu City Council and the state DOT: • Install speed humps or other traffic calming measures to slow drivers entering the neighborhood. • Add a City camera near Wilder and Keeaumoku to support public safety and future police investigations. •Install a safer crosswalk with flashing warning lights. •Trim trees and overgrown branches on Kewalo and Lunalilo to improve visibility. •Install speed limit signs on Kewalo and nearby streets. •Improve street lighting on Kewalo and Lunalilo.
