The issue

As parents and concerned citizens, we are deeply concerned about the increasing number of pupil free days in our schools. From an original four days to the current eight days have hindered our children's learning time.

Our kids already enjoy a two-week break every two months. We don't find it an issue for them to be away from learning on holidays, but these increasing pupil free days are of concern. When will our kids find ample time for undisturbed learning?

In a world that is rapidly advancing and competitive, every school day counts. Core skills in numeracy, literacy and science are built over time. Every hour, day, and week of learning matters. University of Ottawa research suggests that pupils, who have missed an average of 10 days in a school year, see a dip in their performance (Aucejo, 2021). We are worried that excessive days off may lead to similar concerns.

Above all, we are witnessing that our kids spend these pupil free days idling at home, instead of collaborating and learning in a school environment. We believe that the role of our teachers and schools is to provide guidance and learning for the better future of our children, and not only during the designated school hours.

We implore the education authorities to consider our plea and revise the policy of pupil free days. Let's go back to the original four days, ensuring our children have more time to learn, grow and flourish.
