Problem:

As a resident of Hampstead, NC, I am concerned about vehicle congestion and speed on this stretch of Highway 17 and future congestion as our community and those to the North of us continue to grow.  There have been 48 accidents at these two intersections from January 2019 - September 2023 (Source:: NCDOT Traffic Safety Unit):

• Sloop Point Road - 30 accidents, 9 injuries, estimated $125,600 damage
• Royal Tern Drive - 18 accidents, 17 injuries, estimate $170,300 damage

Solution:

The NCDOT commissioned a study in May 2022 and developed a recommendation to install traffic lights at these two intersections to remove risk and improve safety. They have been pursuing funding and have not been successful at this point. In 2023, they identified a grant to complete a portion of it, which would have required 25% funding from the Pender County Board of Commissioners.  They presented this to the board on October 16, 2023 and it was voted down, citing that “they were not aware of any concerns”.

Our community deserves safe roads where everyone can travel without fear.  By signing this petition, you are showing your support for the NCDOT recommendations - an action that could prevent future accidents.  The completed petition will be sent to Local and State Government Officials who can help secure funding.
