Redirect HS2 Funds to Improve Tyne And Wear Public Transport

The Issue

I am a Gateshead resident who commutes to Newcastle City Centre, a journey that should be simple and short. Yet, this hasn't been the case for many years. Severe delays and cancellations on the Metro network have become a routine part of my commute and the commutes of thousands of others, causing significant distress and anxiety. Despite increasing prices, service improvements are scarce. A new fleet, promised for Spring 2024, has barely materialised; only one new train has made its entry into service.

Fuelled by experiences, supported by numbers, this petition specifically addresses the North's denial of a key right - efficient public service. The government's HS2 project, catering predominately to London and surrounding areas, overflows with funds. Redirecting this money towards improving the Northeast's struggling public transport systems could transform countless lives and journeys daily.

The North of England has been overlooked for far too long, despite the government's multitude of 'level up' promises. Now, it's time for us to step up and demand the attention and investment we deserve. If you believe in equality in public services and are moved by the daily struggles of ordinary commuters, please sign this petition. Together, let's ask the government to reprioritize their spending: redirect HS2 funds to improving the Tyne and Wear's Public Transport system instead.
