Artificial Intelligence (AI) is advancing at an unprecedented speed, with billions of dollars invested in these developments. While AI brings many potential benefits, our planet is facing severe environmental threats that require immediate and significant investment and attention. We, therefore, request all companies funding AI advancements to rethink their investment strategies.

These valuable resources could be directed towards urgent climate rescue endeavors: clean water initiatives, ocean and soil conservation, sustainable agriculture, waste management, reforestation, the development of sustainable infrastructure, and the production of environmentally friendly products. It's critical to remember that AI will only thrive in a sustainable world.

According to the World Bank, over 2.2 billion people across the globe don't have access to safely managed drinking water, and over 4.2 billion lack safe sanitation services. Oceanic Society mentions increasing pollution in oceans, impacting marine life and ecosystems. Not to mention, the FAO reports, between 1990 and 2016, the world lost 502,000 square miles (1.3 million square kilometers) of forest, an area larger than South Africa.

Addressing these issues requires urgent funding, the kind currently directed into AI developments. We argue that investments in these areas will ensure a healthier planet, benefit economies, and provide a stable base from which to further explore AI innovations.
