Redevelop Glenmont Shopping Center

Redevelop Glenmont Shopping Center
The Issue
Glenmont is a small town of approximately 15,000 people within the borders of Wheaton and Silver Spring in Montgomery County, MD. Unfortunately what most people recognize and remember about Glenmont is the Glenmont Shopping Center. It was originally built in 1956 and has not been updated and modernized since. It is an embarrassment, an eyesore, and dangerous.
In the 2013 Glenmont Sector Plan approved by Montgomery County, it states
"The 1978 Plan discussed the need for a physical upgrade of the shopping center structures to develop a “positive image” for the community. The 1997 Plan characterized the center as poorly configured and unattractive with a confusing circulation pattern. To date, the recommendations of both plans have not been implemented. "
In addition, it states
"...the physical structure is worn and it lacks retail and entertainment services desired by the surrounding community. Fragmented ownership (15 different properties with 12 different owners)... will continue to be a major challenge in the foreseeable future. Any significant redevelopment would require assembling all or some of the parcels...."
After 44 years since the 1978 plan calling for physical upgrades to develop a "positive image" for the community, we must push harder than ever to update the long-dilapidated Glenmont Shopping Center. It is clear from the 2013 Sector Plan that the first step of any type of redevelopment requires an assemblage of the parcels in the shopping center.
By signing this petition, you are sending the message to the Glenmont Shopping Centers parcel owners and to the Montgomery County local officials and bureaucrats that they must work together to find a solution to assemble the parcels, in order for redevelopment to have a chance of success.
Let the communities voice be heard that we want a better Glenmont Shopping Center!
