Welcome to August 2024. When we started this online petition just over two years ago, we had a goal of reaching 5,000 signatures. Today, we are on the doorstep of reaching 5,000 signatures. That is quite an accomplishment.  What is more amazing is that the current 4,595 signatures represent you and people in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and 18 foreign countries. You represent 3,000 postal zip codes and 433 of 435 U.S. congressional districts.

I'm routinely asked how many signatures are needed to redesignate the Arlington House as a National Historic Site. I have two answers. The first answer is - As many as it takes! Five thousand of anything is an awesome number. We'd love to see this petition reach 100,000 signatures. To get there takes a lot of help, attention and sharing the word with friends and acquaintances across the country.

I actually use your show of support when I speak to elected officials on Capitol Hill.  A graphic speaks loudly. For them to know that you all, their constituents, care about this issue really does have an positive impact on their support for the legislation. That is why the second answer to the question about how many signatures are needed is more important than the first answer. The second answer is - We want at least 50 signatures from every state. This helps to illustrate that this issue, this request, is not a local Virginia or DMV issue. Citizens across the country care about interpreting history at sites like Arlington House thoroughly and completely. Currently, 85 percent of the signatures on the petition are from 21 states and Washington D.C. Look at the graphic to find your state. The states of Louisiana, South Carolina, Alabama and Mississippi have 38, 37, 35 and 35 signatures, respectively. They're soooo close to 50 signatures! The states of Alaska, Montana, South Dakota, North Dakota and Wyoming each have less than 10 signatures. All of these states have legislators whose support we need to pass this legislation. The more signatures of citizens in their district, the easier it is to get their attention and convince them to support the legislation. Help us reach 50-in-50, that is at least 50 signatures in all 50 states by the time we reach the 5,000 signatures plateau. Tap into your network and your extended network. Encourage friends and family to sign the petition. Don't forget to include the zip code. Anyone 18 years of age and older can sign the petition. THANKS!
