Redesign the New York State Flag to Better Represent its Rich Culture and History

Redesign the New York State Flag to Better Represent its Rich Culture and History
The Issue
As a resident of New York, I take great pride in my state's rich culture and history. However, our current flag does not capture the essence or uniqueness of our state. It fails to stand out among the flags of our fellow states and does not resonate with our residents or represent our unique history and culture. Therefore, I am urging a redesign of the New York State Flag—and I propose we do this through a statewide design contest.
New York is home to over 19 million people and has immense historical significance. It was one of the original thirteen colonies, and is home to Ellis Island, where millions of immigrants first came to America, and the Statue of Liberty, a symbol of freedom. Our state has so much to offer, yet our current flag fails to express the complexity and richness of our history, culture, and people.
I propose that we launch a statewide contest to design a new flag, allowing all New Yorkers to contribute their creativity and pride to this important symbol. This contest would engage residents, artists, and students across the state in creating a flag that truly represents us and our shared values. The winning design will be chosen through public voting and a panel of experts, ensuring the flag embodies the spirit of New York and its diverse population.
The new flag should adhere to the North American Vexillological Association's principles of good flag design, emphasizing simplicity, meaningful symbolism, the use of a limited color palette, and the absence of lettering or seals.
Let’s give New York a flag that better reflects the heart of its residents and the spirit of our great state. Sign this petition to show your support for a flag design contest that will allow us to create a symbol that we can all take pride in.
I am attaching my personal favorite design I found online on Reddit, which can serve as inspiration for this exciting opportunity.
