Redesign the City of Memphis Flag

Redesign the City of Memphis Flag
The Issue

This is the current City of Memphis flag. It’s time we ask ourselves if this is representative of who we are and what our city stands for. Is this an inspiring design that breeds creativity? Does this design allow us to express our love for our city through its symbolism and colors? Does this flag make us proud of where we’re from, and is it a tool to show that pride? Do local businesses use this flag and its colors as a branding avenue to signal that they are a Memphis business? Is this a symbol that unites us, no matter what neighborhood we call home?
Our flag should accomplish all of these things, and much more.
The seal is meant to represent the government, and the flag is meant to represent the people; they should never be one and the same. This is not about erasing history. The seal will still stand as is at City Hall, on police uniforms, and on the mayor’s podium. Redesigning our city flag is a way to enhance our history and even shape it as we move forward. We deserve a unifying symbol that draws from our rich history and culture.
We want our flag to be deeply symbolic and to represent everyone from our city, no matter their background. It should be a symbol that brings us together and reflects who we are. Memphis drives the culture, and our flag should represent that.
Since June 2025, there has been a concentrated, grassroots effort to demonstrate to city officials why this change is needed. Several designs are already in the works, and there have been multiple meetings with city officials to discuss the importance of a new flag. Now, this effort needs public support to move it forward.
The goal of signing this petition is to raise awareness that Memphis has a flag, show that we want a new one, and amplify the growing movement for change. We deserve a thoughtful and meticulous process to develop the best flag possible and see it officially adopted by the city.
If this is something you care about and feel that Memphis needs, please sign and share this petition, by word of mouth or directly with someone. Before you do, ask them how they feel about the Memphis flag and watch their reaction. Most likely, they’ll ask what the flag looks like or say, “Memphis has a flag?” This alone shows the disconnect we have with our flag and highlights the need for this change.
This is our opportunity to lead by example and show how a meaningful city flag can unite and inspire an entire community. Every signature is a step toward a symbol that reflects our pride, creativity, and identity as Memphians.
Thank you for reading until the end. Every signature matters and contributes to making our city a better place.
