Recycling of single use medical blister packs

The Issue

In the current green climate, our Scottish Government wish to be net zero by 2030, here in Dumfries and Galloway the council has set a date for 2025.

Medical blister packs - everyone has used these packs at one time or another, some constantly on medication will go through packs of these a day! Did you know that these packs do not decompose? We casually throw them away without a thought in our general waste and they will still be sat the exact same in 500 years time.

A company called Terracycle (UK office in Greenford, London) was recycling these items via Superdrug pharmacies. In Dumfries and Galloway, there is not Superdrug with a pharmacy! Our nearest one being Carlisle ( more than 70 miles round trip).

Cheryl McCormack noted this and contacted Terracycle herself and they said they were happy for collection points to be set up across of the whole of D&G. So, this is what happened with Cheryl and her friends until Terracycle halted the whole programme as it was too successful, yes makes no sense.

No one in the government seems concerned about this waste and the enormity of the problem it creates. After much emailing with MSPs, Holyrood and Zero Waste Scotland, we seem to be sitting in no man’s land.

We want to petition this to make awareness to the general public to get this petition filled. For this to be taken on by a head government would be huge and momentous as it seems to be just getting brushed aside and ignored.

There is a time coming where pharmaceutical companies will be fined for the use of blister packs but would the fine be cheaper than changing all products to something easily recycled?
