Recycle Enhancement Program (Corpus Christi, TX)

The Issue

We, the undersigned residents and ratepayers of Corpus Christi, Texas, hereby demand that the City take immediate action to correct a long-standing and unacceptable problem with our bulk recycling dumpsters.

Currently, Republic Services provides bulk recycling dumpsters that are visually identical in color to trash dumpsters, distinguished only by small decals. These decals are not sufficient—many are small, faded, poorly placed, or visible on only one side. As a result, residents, visitors, and tourists frequently mistake recycling dumpsters for trash, causing contamination that results in entire recycling loads being sent to the landfill.

This problem has been known to the City for years, yet no meaningful action has been taken. By refusing to address the obvious confusion, the City is enabling wasteful practices, undermining the intent of our recycling program, and allowing recyclables to be buried in landfills.

As paying customers of the City’s contracted waste services, we expect our fees to support a system that works—one that makes recycling clear, accessible, and effective.

We demand the following actions be taken without delay:

Require Republic Services to paint all bulk recycling dumpsters in a bright, unmistakable color, such as vivid green, to distinguish them from trash dumpsters.
Apply large, high-contrast “RECYCLING ONLY” lettering on all visible sides of every recycling dumpster, in addition to the paint.
Include these requirements in the City’s contract with Republic Services, with a clear compliance deadline.
This is a low-cost, high-impact change that will:

Reduce contamination in recycling loads.
Increase proper recycling participation among residents and visitors.
Demonstrate Corpus Christi’s commitment to environmental stewardship as a Gulf Coast city.

By signing below, we affirm that we pay for and use Corpus Christi’s waste services and support this petition to improve our recycling program through better visibility of bulk recycling dumpsters.
