The Issue

India has always been regarded as a Motherland—a sacred entity that nurtures, protects, and gives identity to its people. The very phrase “Bharat Mata” reflects a deep cultural and emotional connection where the nation is seen as a mother figure.

In this context, the widespread use of the title “Father of the Nation” for Mahatma Gandhi raises a philosophical and cultural inconsistency. While we hold immense respect and gratitude for his unparalleled contributions to India’s freedom struggle, assigning a paternal title to a nation traditionally viewed as a mother may not align with the cultural ethos of our country.

This petition is not about diminishing the legacy or importance of Mahatma Gandhi, whose ideals and sacrifices remain foundational to India’s identity. Instead, it is about encouraging a more culturally coherent and inclusive way of honoring national figures—one that resonates with the long-standing belief of India as a motherland.

Furthermore, it is worth noting that the title “Father of the Nation” has no official constitutional recognition in India, and its usage remains largely symbolic and informal.

We respectfully request:

A reconsideration of the usage of the title “Father of the Nation” in official and public discourse.
Encouragement of alternative ways to honor national leaders that align with India’s cultural identity.
Promotion of language that reflects unity without creating hierarchical or symbolic contradictions.
India’s strength lies in its diversity, values, and deeply rooted traditions. Let us ensure that the way we honor our heroes is both respectful and culturally consistent.

Let us celebrate our leaders with dignity—while staying true to the spirit of our Motherland.
