Reconsider the CANRB's decision on Bridgete Lynn Shelton's case
The Issue
My name is Bridgete Lynn Shelton. As a mother, I have endured a challenging and heartrending situation that has deeply affected both my children and myself. Due to circumstances beyond my control, I was placed on the central registry by the Children's Division for allegations of child abuse and neglect. My reason for this petition is to seek justice and clarity regarding the CANRB’s decision to uphold this finding, given the complexities surrounding my circumstances.
The heart of this issue centers on my decision to allow my children’s father to remain in their lives despite knowing that he posed a risk to their mental, physical, and emotional wellbeing. This was not a decision made out of neglect or disregard, but rather out of fear and coercion. He consistently threatened me with various forms of retaliation, leaving me with little to no viable options to protect my family without further endangering them or myself.
I understand the importance of child safety and wellbeing, and it has always been my utmost priority. However, I ask that the CANRB examine the context in which my decisions were made. Many parents, especially those in abusive situations, find themselves trapped in compromising situations or under duress that can lead to desperate choices. My story is one of many where systemic solutions could offer better protection and support for those who feel powerless.
It is well-documented that victims of domestic abuse often remain silent or comply with their abuser's demands due to fear of further harm. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, about 1 in 4 women and 1 in 9 men experience severe intimate partner physical violence. The situations these individuals find themselves in frequently involve manipulation and threats, preventing them from acting in ways outsiders might perceive as rational. I implore the CANRB to reassess the scrutiny placed upon me, viewing the situation as a broader societal challenge rather than an isolated failure.
I seek not only to clear my name and restore my standing as a mother but also to spark a conversation about the need for comprehensive support systems for parents caught in abusive dynamics. By signing this petition, you are helping to pave the path toward reshaping policies and systems that take into account the full scope of domestic abuse situations, offering compassionate and informed solutions.
Please support this campaign to urge the CANRB to reconsider their decision and to promote changes that could prevent similar situations in the future. Your signature could help transform fear into hope and provide a lifeline for parents and children who desperately need it. Sign this petition and stand for justice, understanding, and change.
