Reconsider Outriders 2: Build the Next Great FPS Looter Shooter
Le problème
To People Can Fly and Square Enix:
The looter-shooter genre is entering a rare moment.
For years, Destiny 2 occupied a position few games could challenge: a persistent first-person shooter combining satisfying gunplay, abilities, loot, buildcrafting, cooperative PvE, progression, and years of continued content. Now, Destiny 2's planned live-service content updates have ended, and no Destiny 3 has been publicly announced.
But the audience for these games hasn't disappeared. Hundreds of thousands of players have signed a petition calling for Destiny 3. Destiny 2's Monument of Triumph update brought a major resurgence of players back to the game. Destiny: Rising attracted more than 10 million pre-registrations before launch.
Players still want a great, long-term looter shooter. They just need somewhere to go. And we believe Outriders deserves the opportunity to become that next great franchise.
Why Outriders?
When Outriders launched in 2021, it already had many of the ingredients players love about this genre:
- Powerful abilities.
- Deep buildcrafting.
- Legendary loot.
- Distinct classes.
- Aggressive, fast-paced combat.
- Cooperative PvE.
- A dark and unique science-fiction universe.
- And most importantly, an identity of its own.
Outriders did not need to become Destiny then, and Outriders 2 should not become Destiny now.
We want Outriders.
We want the Altered. We want Enoch. We want its brutality, powers, weapons, classes, builds, loot, enemies and power fantasy.
But the gaming market of 2026 is very different from the one Outriders entered in 2021. And we believe that creates an opportunity.
Make Outriders 2 a first-person shooter
The third-person looter-shooter market is crowded with established franchises and numerous competitors.
The persistent first-person looter-shooter market has a much clearer opening.
An FPS Outriders 2 could take everything that made the original game special and bring it into first person—not to imitate another franchise, but to establish Outriders in a space where a massive audience is looking for its next home.
Imagine experiencing Altered powers from first person. Imagine Outriders' aggressive combat philosophy, weapons, abilities and buildcrafting designed around an FPS from the beginning.
Let Outriders evolve.
Give Outriders the long-term future the original never had
The original Outriders was deliberately not a live-service game. That meant players could experience its campaign, perfect their builds, conquer its endgame—and eventually run out of reasons to return.
We believe Outriders 2 should be different.
Build it as a persistent live-service game designed to last for years. But don't repeat one of the biggest mistakes associated with modern live-service games:
Do not use live service as an excuse to launch an unfinished game.
Outriders 2 should launch as a complete experience, with a substantial campaign, deep progression, meaningful endgame, compelling loot, build diversity and cooperative content.
Then let the live service expand it.
Build a sustainable live service
A modern Outriders sequel could also rethink what "live service" means.
Recurring activities, modifiers, challenges, loot rotations, events and world conditions could be built as modular systems capable of rotating automatically from developer-created content.
Developers could spend less time manually maintaining routine rotations and more time creating meaningful permanent additions: expansions, locations, enemies, classes, abilities, loot and endgame experiences.
Modern development tools and responsible uses of AI could assist with testing, telemetry, balancing analysis and repetitive operational work while developers remain responsible for Outriders' creative direction and content.
Build the systems to last so the developers can focus on building the world.
Most importantly: get the launch right
Outriders had enormous potential, but its original launch was hurt by technical and server problems at the exact moment when the most people were paying attention.
An Outriders sequel deserves better.
- Take the time necessary.
- Test it extensively.
- Stress-test the servers.
- Protect player progression.
- Launch with a substantial endgame.
- Make the game reliable.
- Make it complete.
- Do not rush Outriders 2 to capture this opportunity.
Instead:
Greenlight urgently. Announce early. Develop patiently. Launch complete.
The opportunity exists now, so we believe the commitment should happen now.
But the game should release only when it is ready.
Our request to People Can Fly and Square Enix
We are asking People Can Fly and Square Enix to reconsider the future of Outriders and explore the development of Outriders 2 as a first-person, persistent live-service looter shooter.
Not a Destiny clone. Not a Borderlands clone. Not a replacement for what made Outriders special.
Outriders 2.
Bigger. More ambitious. Built for the long term. And unmistakably Outriders. The original game proved this universe has potential.
The market has changed. The audience is looking for something new. And the position at the top of the FPS looter-shooter genre is open.
Give Outriders another shot.
