Reconsider Hypothyroidism Detection Cut-Off Levels in Pregnancy
The Issue
Reconsider Hypothyroidism Detection Cut-Off Levels in Pregnancy
To the American Medical Association (AMA) and The Endocrine Society of Australia.
Who is affected?
Thousands of pregnant women and their unborn children are at grave risk due to the recent decision to raise the cut-off levels for detecting hypothyroidism during pregnancy (Hamblin et al., 2019). This condition, if left undiagnosed and untreated, can lead to severe developmental issues, including cognitive impairments and autism (Thompson et al., 2018); (Rotem et al., 2020). These changes mean that many mothers-to-be might not receive the critical diagnosis and care they need, putting the future of their children in jeopardy. As a community of concerned parents, we have seen firsthand the devastating impact of these preventable conditions.
What is at stake?
If these new cut-off levels remain unchanged, countless families will face the heartbreak and challenges of developmental disorders that could have been prevented. The long-term consequences are profound—children suffering from cognitive impairments and autism (Román et al., 2013); (Haddow et al., 1999), families enduring emotional and financial burdens, and a society grappling with increased healthcare costs. Our children’s futures are being compromised, and the stress and heartache that come with these preventable conditions are immeasurable. We cannot stand by while the health and potential of our children are put at risk.
Why is now the time to act?
The urgency for action cannot be overstated. Every day that passes with these new cut-off levels in place is a day that more children are exposed to preventable harm. We must act now to ensure that every pregnant woman receives the comprehensive and early detection of hypothyroidism that is her right. The health and future of our children depend on it. By addressing this issue immediately, we can prevent unnecessary suffering and secure a healthier future for generations to come.
We call on the AMA and The Endocrine Society to prioritize the well-being of mothers and their children by reversing these changes. This is a moral imperative to protect future generations. Stand with us to protect our children from these risks.
