Recommend a REVOTE for the New Name of the New High School

PETITION FOR A REVOTE ON THE NEW HIGH SCHOOL NAME

For the past three decades, I have been a proud resident of our community. Now, my own children are on the verge of entering into a new high school in a place we all call home. A place where all decision making should reflect the will of the people who live here, including our student body.

However, the recent decision to name the new high school Ironhorse with a Thunder mascot has left a lot of us unrepresented. Ironhorse and Thunder do not resonate with our community, nor do these symbols embody the excitement, loyalty and shared pride that weave together the fabric of our community.

School names and mascots play a crucial role in building a strong community spirit, reflecting common values, and generating excitement. Research shows that school identity determined by names and mascots can contribute to the educational, social, and emotional outcomes of students (American Psychological Association). A name and mascot that do not resonate could hinder these outcomes.

By demanding a revote, we are not undermining any administrative decision but are advocating for broader representation and participation within our community. We want a name and mascot that we can all be proud of, that encapsulates our shared values, and that excites our future leaders. Let's pursue a future where every student stepping into this high school feels like they belong there, a future where a sense of pride is evoked every time the school's name is mentioned or the mascot is seen.

Please sign this petition to press for a revote for the new high school name and mascot. Let us all participate in shaping the identity of the institution that is a significant part of our community and our children's lives.
