The issue

Australia is at a critical juncture in its history—a moment where reflecting on its colonial past and charting a new course towards decolonization is not just vital, but morally and legally necessary. We are petitioning the United Nations to list Australia as a Non-Self-Governing Territory and facilitate a comprehensive, peaceful, and orderly decolonization process. This initiative must be in harmony with the rights of the First Nations peoples as enshrined in international law.

This appeal is deeply rooted in rights protections and precedents established and recognized by the UN. These include the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, which affirms that Indigenous peoples have the right to self-determination and the Charter of the United Nations, which underscores the promotion of social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom. Furthermore, historical UN General Assembly Resolutions such as 1514, 1541, and 1654 set a framework and provide a clear mandate for decolonization efforts globally.

Australia's history is marred with injustices that have long affected the First Nations peoples. Legal recognitions and verbal affirmations alone are insufficient to address these historic and ongoing disparities. Therefore, a formal and systematic effort is needed to honor their rights and ensure their voices are a central component of any decolonization initiative.

Listing Australia as a Non-Self-Governing Territory is a pivotal step in acknowledging the support required to address historical wrongs and in facilitating dialogue and action that empowers Indigenous communities. This categorization by the UN would not only open avenues for dialogue and cooperation but also reinforce Australia's commitment to human rights and its willingness to engage with its past constructively.

Support this petition to hold Australia accountable to its First Nations peoples, guiding the country towards a future where decolonization processes are transparent, respectful, and consistent with international human rights laws. Sign this petition and stand with us as we urge the UN to take this critical step towards justice and reconciliation.
