The Issue

My story begins with a painful past that many unfortunately relate to - experiencing unending cycles of abuse. My childhood was dominated by the scars of both mental and physical violence from my parents - the people I should have trusted the most. The unsettlement continues into my adulthood, as my wife has also been subject to something on similar lines from my parents. I create this petition to put into words, our plea for a necessary and overdue change.

Every year, millions of children suffer from some form of abuse, be it physical, sexual, or psychological, from their parents or caregivers. According to the National Children's Alliance, nearly 700,000 children are abused in the U.S each year. This does not simply fade away when those children mature into adults; instead, the impact often bleeds into their adult life, affecting their personal and professional relationships.

We call upon lawmakers to consider and enact laws that would enable adult children to be legally separated or "divorced" from their abusive parents. The need is clear, and the severity is palpable. Through this, we can offer those that have suffered under such conditions an officially recognized means of severing toxic relationships, providing a path forward free from the torment of the past.

Denying the traumatic experiences of adults who have suffered from parental abuse by not providing them with a legal option to distance themselves effectively minimizes their harrowing experiences and stands as a barrier to their peace and mental stability.

Join us in this effort towards legal reform and societal improvement. Your support could not only transform an individual life but also could help reshape how our society addresses parental abuse. Help us rectify the systemic injustices that adult survivors of childhood abuse face. Please, sign this petition to help adult children effectively "divorce" their abusive parents and pave a way for healing and recovery.
