Who is affected?
Millions of people across Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, and England are asked every day to select “United Kingdom” from drop-down menus that don’t represent their national identity. Whether signing up for services, shipping goods, booking travel, or accessing healthcare and education systems, they are misrepresented by a label that erases their distinct country, culture, language, and legal system.

The lack of recognition in international data standards like ISO 3166 leads to real-world problems:

Shipping to Scotland often costs more than to England, yet both are treated identically
Public services use different legal and education systems, but digital forms assume they’re the same
People cannot accurately describe where they’re from — or who they are
 
What is at stake?
If this continues, people in all four nations will keep being digitally mislabeled, overcharged, and culturally erased. As the digital world becomes more central to our lives, being visible in global standards is not symbolic — it’s essential.

But this isn’t just about identity. It affects commerce, logistics, policy making, and access to services. The UK is made up of four nations — each with their own legal systems, languages, and devolved institutions. Pretending it is a single, uniform “country” is inaccurate and damaging.

 
Why is now the time to act?
There is no existing petition calling on the ISO 3166 Maintenance Agency to fix this. Territories with less autonomy — such as Hong Kong, Greenland, and the Åland Islands — are already recognised. Why not Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, and England?

This is a respectful, fact-based request. We are not asking for political independence — we are asking for functional accuracy and cultural respect.
