The census provides a snapshot of Australia. Our lives, our services and the resources we need. LGBTIQ+ people deserve to be seen in this snapshot.
Over the past week, we've been reeling from the shock announcement that questions to count our community would be cut from the next census.
Then the Prime Minister changed course, confirming that a question on sexual orientation will proceed to testing for the 2026 Census. But this doesn’t go far enough.
Without questions that capture trans and gender diverse people, and people with innate variations of sex characteristics, many in our community will be left uncounted for years to come.
There’s still time to ensure all of us are counted in for 2026. But we need to keep the pressure up, and we need your help to make it happen.
Will you share this petition widely for a census that counts all of us properly? With enough signatures we can have this petition tabled in parliament, so every name counts!
We still don’t know how many LGBTIQ+ people there are in Australia, or where we all live, or the families we come home to because the last census failed to properly count us.
This is crucial data that informs decisions, from the highest levels of government to grassroot community service providers.
Failing to count all of us properly and accurately in the census means all of Australia is left in the dark.
This past week we’ve already seen such an incredible response calling on the federal government to stand for common sense and include questions that count all of us in 2026.
While we continue working hard behind the scenes, there’s something you can do to help keep this momentum going.
