The Kilsyth Centenary Pool, affectionately known as "The Dome," has been a cherished community asset for decades. Its closure in March 2023 due to structural concerns and the subsequent decision to permanently decommission the facility in October 2023 have left a significant void in our community. 

Impact on the Community

Health and Fitness: The pool offered essential facilities for swimming lessons, aqua aerobics, and lap swimming, promoting physical well-being across all age groups. Its absence has disrupted fitness routines and limited access to aquatic exercise, particularly affecting those with mobility issues who benefited from low-impact workouts.
Social Connection: Beyond physical health, the pool served as a social hub where friendships were formed, and community bonds strengthened. The closure has led to a loss of social interaction, especially among senior citizens who relied on the pool for both exercise and companionship.
Local Organizations: Groups like the Lilydale Swim Club have been displaced, leading to a decline in membership and challenges in maintaining training schedules. This displacement has hindered the development of local swimming talent and reduced opportunities for youth engagement in structured activities. 

The Case for Rebuilding

While the original structure faced significant issues, including environmental concerns and high maintenance costs, these challenges present an opportunity to envision a modern facility tailored to current community needs. 

• Sustainable Design: A new pool can incorporate energy-efficient technologies and sustainable materials, reducing environmental impact and operational costs.
• Accessibility: Designing with inclusivity in mind ensures that people of all abilities can access and benefit from the facility.
• Economic and Social Benefits: Rebuilding the pool would not only create construction jobs but also revitalize the local economy by attracting visitors and hosting events. It would restore a vital space for social interaction, enhancing the overall quality of life in Kilsyth.

We, the undersigned, urge the Yarra Ranges Council and relevant authorities to prioritize the reconstruction of the Kilsyth Centenary Pool.
