On a Friday, January 13, 2023, Griff's Irish Pub, our beloved local institution, was tragically engulfed in flames. This iconic establishment has been a cherished gathering place for nearly 70 years, serving as the heart and soul of our community in Houston. We are devastated by its loss and deeply concerned about the impact this will have on our neighborhood.

Griff's Irish Pub holds a special place in the hearts of countless residents and visitors alike. It has been a hub for sporting events,celebrations, milestones, and memories that have shaped our lives over generations. The warm ambiance, friendly staff, and mouthwatering food made it more than just a bar and eatery; it became an integral part of our cultural fabric.

The significance of this establishment extends beyond its role as a local favorite. Griff's Irish Pub is also steeped in history; it stands as a testament to Houston's rich heritage and serves as a reminder of the city's vibrant past. Losing such an important landmark would be an irreparable blow to our community's identity.

The overwhelming need for your support in signing this petition is not financial.  We were told, early on in this exhausting process, that because the catastrophic event we suffered was no fault of our own, that we would be able, as long as we met criteria (which we did and have documented proof from the city’s own inspector)  we could repair our same structure and it would allow us to be deemed a remodel and not be subjected to some of the more stringent requirements of new construction.  So we proceeded making and paying for plans under that assurance. Our submitted remodel plans include bringing an admittedly dated facility to a new, refreshed, safe and inviting venue while retaining the sporting historic charm of which people have flocked to for nearly 70 years.  Upon submitting these plans, we were told a vastly different story that includes a very costly drainage system (on a property that historically has never flooded) and extremely slow permitting process.

We understand that rebuilding after such devastation is no easy task. However, we firmly believe that resurrecting Griff's Irish Pub is not only essential but also economically beneficial for Houston.

We urge the local authorities and city planners to join hands with us in this endeavor. Together, we can create a solution that facilitates progress and helps avoid unnecessary and prohibitively expensive demands that could delay our progress toward rebuilding for up to an additional year.
