8/25/26 Meeting w/ Parks & Recs Director Rob Hunter

We’ve reached 1,443 signatures on this petition— I want to share a quick update with you! Today I had a meeting with Rob Hunter our director of Parks & Recreation for Coral Springs.
He informed me that the city has been actively pursuing grants to fund the skatepark & that the city council will likely require at least 50% of the park to be funded in order to approve the project and have the city spend the additional 50% that will be required to fund the project, however, with the uncertainty of the upcoming tax cuts to homesteaded properties, that may be voted into effect on 11/3/26, the entire project may come to a standstill due to a projected 22%+ budget cut for Parks & Recs and deeper revenue losses within the city etc.
It seems likely that the Coral Springs skatepark project may not get approved for 2027-2028 with the uncertainty regarding FL homestead tax cuts which is a vast majority of the cities revenue.
Rob did mention that the city has applied for a few different grants with a potential of raising up to $775,000+ which would cover more than half of the project, however, the approved amount may be less. Rob said they are anticipating the entire skatepark project to cost approx. $1,000,000+ so that would mean at least $500,000 would need to be raised via grants in order for this project to have a chance to come to fruition. We ended our meeting with a discussion of when may be a good time to follow up to get an update regarding the approval of the grants that were applied to & if the tax cuts were "Approved" would that have had an impact on the projects potential of being approved. He said February of 2027 would be a good time to follow up to get some clarity on where the project stands so I will be following up then to provide another update.
Until then I'll call upon any one of you out there reading this.. if you have any ideas on how we can potentially start some sort of fundraiser or any rich friends with an extra $1M laying around for the skatepark that would be awesome! 😎
The path forward to seeing a beautiful new skatepark in Coral Springs doesn't look easy but it's certainly possible & I know the stars will align eventually.
