Haringey Council has shut down our community space and we want it back!

The Issue

In May, Haringey Council closed the community centre in Down Lane Park - home to a nursery, the Living Under One Sun cafe, community garden and busy centre used daily by residents of all ages and local groups.

Now the council, working with private developers, plans to demolish the building altogether! They have refused to talk to community members who need this space and have made empty promises about a future building which will be under a quarter of the size - unable to serve our community’s needs.

This is what regeneration looks like in Haringey: public spaces shut down, local families pushed out, and developers put first. But our community continues to fight for the spaces we need.

This summer, local families and residents organised daily activities and free meals from the space, proving how vital it is for our community. We were forced to leave in September and the centre remains locked up and out of use - but we will not give up.

We need to pressure Haringey Council to listen and provide what the community needs.

We are calling on Haringey Council to:

1. Re-open the community centre for immediate use by local organisations

2. Scrap plans to demolish the building and gardens

3. Use the remaining budget to refurbish the centre

4. Work with residents and local groups to develop a binding ‘community plan’ for the future of the building and gardens
