The Issue

As a local resident of the Antelope Valley, I've found that our community, while geographically large, has limited recreational opportunities, especially during the summer. As a woman, I also appreciated how safe and welcoming the AVC campus felt, which made it one of the few places where I felt comfortable playing alone or with friends, even in the evenings.

The Antelope Valley College (AVC) tennis courts are a valuable resource that is currently underutilized and locked away from public use. Situated in a region that boasts sunny weather for most of the year, these courts could serve as an excellent venue for individuals and families alike, providing a space for healthy, outdoor activity that our community desperately needs.

Opening these courts to the public would not only promote physical health but also nurture community interactions and engagement. Residents of Lancaster and the larger Antelope Valley area often seek safe and accessible places to gather, exercise, and enjoy recreational activities. These tennis courts have the potential to fill that gap and offer a diversely aged community a new avenue for leisure and fitness.

From enhancing personal safety concerns for people who wish to engage in evening recreational activities to offering a community venue for tennis enthusiasts and beginners alike, the benefits are vast. Keeping these courts locked deprives the community of opportunities for growth, wellness, and social connections.

Please join me in urging the Antelope Valley College administration to unlock these tennis courts for public use. Sign this petition to support local fitness, recreation, and community development. Together, we can create a more active, connected, and healthy Lancaster.
